New Music Review #16: ‘Long Story Short’ by Yeloboi Tommy

As the years progress since his untimely death in 2019, it has become increasingly clear that Juice WRLD is one of the most influential rappers of the last decade.

Add the Hong Kong-born, Sydney-based rapper Yeloboi Tommy to the growing list of disciples across the world. He’s a natural storyteller, a gifted MC and a capable singer – that’s the “emo rap” triple threat.

Western Sydney has been a bastion of new rap talent for a few years now, and Yeloboi Tommy is no exception.

His most recent release is ‘Long Story Short’, and if you like The Kid LAROI, Polo G, or Stunna Gambino, it’s absolutely worth a listen. And then, probably a bunch more listens. It’s awesome.

The sparkling guitar into invites you for a wander and a tale, and that’s what you get as Yeloboi Tommy breezes in with his likeable voice, melodic flow and natural charisma.

He raps about his worries and fears growing up, his visions of riches and fame, his hopes for his family and friends, his disappointments and struggles, his successes and dreams.

He is introspective, vulnerable, emotional and resonant.

He’s seen some shit. He wants better. He’s going to go and find it. And you believe every damn word.

And a few others:

‘party girl’ by cookii: The retro beat, breathing new life into old school video games and obsolete technology, is absurdly groovy and deeply nostalgic. The lyrics are fun and transportive and more reflective than you might catch on the first listen. Sounds like a team-up between Charli XCX and Aqua.

‘Economising On Cabs’ by Sweater Curse:  A scratchy cacophony of noise and reverb gives way to modern day poetry and rumbling waves of guitars. Juiced up dolewave – if you like Courtney Barnett and Dick Diver, give this is a spin for sure.

‘Bang My Line’ by Cosmo’s Midnight (feat Tkay Maidza): A collab that feels sent from the funk gods. Tkay is one of the most proficient, dexterous and exhilarating rappers Australia has ever produced. Pairing her talents with the buoyant beats and joyous hooks of Cosmo’s Midnight is a can’t-miss combo.
