New Music Review #1: ‘I Care About You’ by Zig Zag

If you like Alex Lahey and Dune Rats, but have always wished they had some of that Client Liaison flair, then you'll love Zig Zag.

And how could you not love Zig Zag?

As we crawled towards the end of this forever lockdown, this song was everything I needed to hear. They clearly know how much we need it, too – like on this line: "It's been a tough year, yeah that fucking sucks. It feels like every single time we get up, we're getting kicked in the guts. But I've got your back..."

The energy in the track is electric, and lead singer Kelly's vocal is delightfully weird and endearing. It’s all wonderfully cathartic, and supportive, and necessary. It's a freshly baked happiness pie, and I've been gobbling down a slice of it every day.

As it draws to a close, the music drops out and the message is felt all the more directly: "I care about you, I care about you, I care about you..." It feels like they're talking right to you, reaching through your headphones to pour you a cup of tea and give you a big hug.

And a few others:

'Lie To Me Again' by The Buoys: One of the best indie rock songs of the year, it’s a potent and liberating rattler working through the claustrophobia and pain of a bad relationship. The whole EP, Unsolicited Advice For Your DIY Disaster, is sensational.

'River Days' by South Summit: Gorgeous, sweeping, almost-hypnotic. The Ocean Alley comparison is unavoidable, but it’s something all of its own as well. The coastal vibes of the music bely the deeply affecting lyrics. Huge things ahead for these guys.

‘Complicated’ by Jacob Bierman: The most striking and intriguing I have found a male vocalist since first hearing 'Brother' by Matt Corby. Very cool.
