New Music Review #20: ‘Sand Monkey’ by Kid Pharaoh
Back in 2018, Egyptian-Australian artist Kid Pharaoh put himself on the map with his debut single, ‘Jesus Looks Like Me’. It was immediately obvious that this guy was a serious talent – a sharp lyricist, dexterous MC and innovative producer unafraid to tackle big topics and harsh truths.
Kid Pharaoh is still all of those things, though he seems to have hardened since that first thoughtful release. Fair enough really, given the direction the world has trended in over the past four years.
‘Sand Monkey’ is a frenzy, a blistering screed against tokenism and racism in the music industry.
Featuring some candid advice from famous Aussie comedian Akmal Saleh, Kid Pharaoh unleashes a series of furious bars, spitting viciously over a vibrant production of Middle Eastern horns.
The final minute is whirling and forceful and claustrophobic – it feels like you are flying down that terrifying tunnel boat ride from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, except the title character is played by Pauline Hanson instead of Gene Wilder.
I really love this song – though I acknowledge I am precisely the type of white armchair critic that Kid Pharaoh could not give two shits about impressing.
And a few others:
‘Constant State’ by Surf Shop Cops: Emotional surf punk with sharp edges, this is an unexpectedly intense musical experience carried by a towering vocal performance that is expressive and ridiculously compelling.
‘Dance Again' by Ashli: Mixing smooth RnB with deep house beats, this is a polished, disco-infused summer hit waiting to happen. Ashli’s voice is entrancing and soulful, riding the beat and luring unsuspecting travellers towards the dance floor.
‘Don’t Give Up On Me' by Crooked Colours: Melancholic electronica from one of Australia’s most accomplished electronic groups, who continue to go from strength to strength. The lyrics are desperate and haunted, while the production is luxuriant and assured.
